One of everyone's most important days of our lives is usually, our own birth, first day of school, graduation, wedding and the birth of our children. You never forget your labor nurse and the day you become a parent for the first time. In preparing for this most important day you make decisions on a name, color and décor of the nursery, and what doctor and hospital you want to deliver your baby. At Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, we understand your unique needs as a mother. We pride ourselves on giving personal care and meeting the needs of mother's to prepare them for the experience. And we are ready to make your birthing experience traditional or by a chosen birthing plan; as special as the precious cargo that is on its way.
Our nursing staff is the cornerstone of what makes Greenbrier Valley Medical Center Obstetrical and Neonatal Team so special. All have extensive experience in Obstetrical Nursing care. And though they are an elite team of professionals, they are also a caring family. Their trademark is EXPERIENCE. The team is made up of 15 perinatal nurses, who are highly skilled in all areas of Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Neonatal Nurses. They are certified in Fetal monitoring, neonatal resuscitation, CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support with OB component. They are not only highly knowledgeable but also caring, and compassionate with their patients. Our three Obstetricians and two Pediatric Hospitalists are Board Certified, and
also very skilled in their Specialties. We have a certified Labor
Educator that is also a Lactation Consultant; Molly McMillion, RN with
years of experience in teaching parents how to cope with labor, joys of
Breast feeding and caring for their newborns. This team of expert specialist work as a team to provide exceptional and professional care in a comfortable environment that makes you feels at home. We know this is a special time in your life, and we will do whatever it takes to ensure that your special event is a memorable one. The nursing staff has over 300 years of combined experience.
Our Well-Baby Nursery accommodates 10 newborns. Moms in the post-partum rooms can decide to have her baby to room in with her. Our unit is built around family and we are flexible with your needs. Our nursery can also accommodate infants that need closer observation and/or need to be transferred to another facility for mechanical ventilation to assist in breathing. With new Telehealth Equipment the Pediatricians can consult with West Virginia University Pediatric Cardiologist over the telehealth TV and the cardiologist can actually see your baby, and talk with the attending here to make decisions on the care of infants suspected of cardiac problems. The Radiology department at GVMC can perform while the Pediatric Cardiologist is reading the Echocardiogram over the Telehealth and have results to give the Pediatrician immediately. These advances in medicine have helped the physicians make better informed decisions of the need for transporting infants to a larger specialized center. In the near future GVMC will be able to connect face to face consults with Neonatologist in all the Larger Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the state.
The Postpartum unit has six private rooms that are large enough to accommodate your many visiting family and friends. They are equipped with WI-FI, TV, private Shower, and large vanity and mirror, and side table for the many flowers, gifts and baby items. We also provide an electric breast pump for those breast feeding mothers, with "double pumping" capability. The rooms also provide accommodations for a partner or close relative to stay the night. We strive to create a comfortable, caring atmosphere within the hospital that welcomes you, your new baby and other family members who are present to share in your special delivery. Since new parents rarely have time for themselves we provide before they are discharged a special meal served in grand style. Our mothers and their significant other; or person of their choice; can
dine on a special meal prepared by Greenbrier Valley Medical Center’s
head chef (please remove this part our head Chef, Kevin Hall) and his
excellent dietary staff. The couple can have a five course meal of their choice served on a lovely table with white dining cloth, fine china, and silver.
We have two LDRs that are available on the unit where Mom labors, delivers and recovers from her delivery. The newborns stay with mom after delivery "baby's skin to the Mother's skin" to promote bonding between mother and baby and also if breast feeding, the skin to skin technique promotes abundant breast milk and ease of breast feeding with fewer delays. The LDRs are decorated to emulate the at home sitting but also have all the emergency supplies and equipment needed for any emergency. They are also equipped with TV, Music, exercise balls for labor positioning and comfort; and recliners for your significant other to stay with you during your labor. Anesthesia department is available for Epidurals day and night for your needed comfort.
Please call Molly McMillion at (304) 647-6017 for any questions
concerning her classes or with breast feeding issues. Click here for more information about our Childbirth Classes. Also view our Childbirth Information Flyer.
